Here are the 3 things that made me say, "Okay, I'll buy 'em.";
1. They will last for a very long time, and will most likely improve with age.
2. I'm infatuated with the manufacturing process.
3. The concept of a pair of pants that learns to fit you is just to cool.
To expand on these ideas further... Throughout the last decade I've slowly tried to remove disposable things from my lifestyle. For instance, instead of furnishing my house with items from Ikea (which often fall apart rapidly), I prefer to scavenge the streets near the end of the month to find the furniture people leave behind when they move. Instead of throwing away old clothes, I try to re-cycle them into new clothes or whatever. When I find clothes that I like, I keep them in my wardrobe until they fall apart (not until they go out of fashion). So I decided that if I could afford it, I'd start investing in clothes that would last me longer. These jeans fit into that whole philosophy. They'll probably be the only pair of jeans I buy this year, and will hopefully last me for many years, instead of constantly replacing jeans that fall apart.
I first got interested in denim while working on a craft project. I was taking old pants that people were throwing away and turning them into cool hats. Through working with denim for a bit, I started to become very interested in the manufacturing process of denim. When Kiya opened his store, he explained to me what selvage is, and what makes the higher end denim in japan so unique. I started to research the old looms they use, and the different types of cotton... the more I researched the more interesting it became. The smaller looms usually have more bumps and other unique characteristics that make them more individual. The pair I have are made from Texas cotton, which is very short cotton and gives them a very different look and feel than most big loom manufactured pants. For whatever reason, I just totally geek out on the details they go through to make these pants.
And finally, the whole one of a kind/worn to fit concept is just too cool. With these pants you are really getting something that is one of a kind. Unique to start off with, but as time takes it's toll the jeans will really become a one of a kind. Nobody else will have my pair of pants, they may have the same brand or even the same model, but they won't look the same as mine.
Sorry if I'm geeking out, I'm not trying to defend the purchase of high end denim or anything.. I just wanted to try to explain what I dig about my jeans. It's more than I've spent for an article of clothing, but I think they are totally going to be worth it.
Pictured above is a close up of some raw selvage denim.. and a modded bolt for absolutely no reason.
